REFLECTIONS
Experience
My experience throughout the past 14 weeks for this module has been extremely enjoyable and smooth sailing which indirectly sparked a lot of new ideas and I acquired new knowledge and skillsets. First and foremost, I have learnt to better manage my time and schedule my workflow. As we are required to constantly update our e-portfolio, I developed a systematic timetable for when to do my work and to log my process on here. Other than that, this class was very much like a stress-free, therapeutic class in which we could create whatever we liked as long as we had the design principles incorporated in our work. Kudos to our lecturer, Dr Charles Sharma Naidu, the most benevolent and compassionate educator, which sometimes also acted as a counsellor of some sort due to his enduring patience and his genuine concern with our mental well being.
Findings
For my whole life, I have always been able to create art are based on my 'intuitions' and 'gut feelings' which sometimes receive praises from the viewers and sometimes, unfortunately, raised a few brows. However, through this module, I was finally able to learn and understand the basic design principles which make up the main components of all design work. By adopting these design principles and Gestalt Theory in my design process, I am now able to create pieces that are truly effective in conveying messages. I have learnt to select, create and organize elements and features in my work to increase appeal, decrease confusion and influence perceptions. Hierarchy, proximity, contrast, balance, to name a few principles, could guide a user's action and put the user's in seamless experiences. I believe all these standard guidelines I have learned in my first semester here at Taylor's Design SChool could very much come in handy in the years to come.
Observations
For the past 14 weeks, I believe I have developed different skills, one of them being my observational skills. Being in online classes means we had to go through everyone's work together and from there I was able to learn to depict and ascertain the littlest details and how they applied the design principles in their artwork. My peers all had their own art style and their work were all unique to each of their own, which I was able to learn to understand and appreciate the different perspectives, guided by our lecturer. Art and styles are subjective and affect each and every viewer differently and I believe that's what makes art such a beautiful thing. Although there are still much to improve and my understanding is likely incomplete because situations are rarely clear-cut and are different all the time, I am keen to continue developing and learning more and cannot wait to start my next semester!
