 REFLECTIONS

Observations

These 14 weeks of classes have been super duper insightful. 3 main things I have learnt: I have a newfound love of looking at typefaces. Admittedly, I am not expertly good at it but one doesn't have to enjoy it! I recently went to an art fair and I realised many of the photos I took and the books I read had type, letters and alphabets on them. Thanks to Mr Vinod, Mr Shamsul and Mr Asrizal I found something so beautiful in typefaces that are just hard to put in words.  Next, I obviously need to start stopping to work on projects and assignments last minute. Things get really hectic because I join a lot of extra activities and have a few freelance jobs so it's quite difficult and challenging to juggle and find a balance between it all. Lastly, I love listening to feedback. Feedback for my own work, so I know how to improve my work but more so feedback directed to others. I believe I've learnt how to turn feedback into other pieces of work and apply them to my very own. I definitely learnt waaay more when I listen to what others have to say than when I talk.

Findings
Typography can be found EVERYWHERE. In a world wh ere we have languages as our main mode of communication, type letters can be found everywhere, on road signs, in books, on food packagings, on body tattoos, and in the most bizarre places if you put creativity into it! Like shadows, bubbles, or microscopic human cheek cells. As described perfectly by Rokusek, Just because we have access to a particular font does not mean that the same amount of attention and detail went into making it. There are a great number of specimens of the type that can elicit the types of emotions that are not desirable. Scroll through the list of fonts on your computer and you may see some that may turn you off or maybe they really resonate with you. That’s the beauty of subjectivity.

Experience
The final project was DEFINITELY my favourite. It made me stop staring into the screen, get out of my chair and get my hands dirty. It forced us to go out of the box and think of the most creative ways to prove a solution. More importantly to me, it made me stop to think and still find fun in the most difficult tasks. As mentioned above, I recently went to Art is Fair KL and had my eyes locked on a few books! I did not purchase but hopefully will be going back there this week to get my hands on them.

Just sharing one of my favourite pieces! Before Mr Vinod and his typography classes, I would've overlooked the nuances in paintings like this. A lot is happening in this piece of work yet they have found a way to balance all the letters and other elements out. The use of colours also played a very important part where it was used to create contrast and bring emphasis to the 2 people in the middle along with the words below them. The Japanese words can be found all over the canvas and it is absolutely beautiful how this piece looks!
