Task 3B: Type Design and Communication

 LECTURES

Mr Vinod and Mr Shamsul explained to us our next task which was to create stickers to be used on messaging apps. We were given a list of festivals and events to choose from. We should express our chosen festival typographically and are allowed to use minor graphical elements in our design. This week, we have to sketch out our design and digitalize but only in black and white.

Our lecturer also mentioned to include the Taylor's logo in our sticker. We should also use only black and white in the first stage of our designing process. Once the design has been approved, only then can we proceed with using colours and adding textures, shadows, etc. The tricky challenge of this project is making sure the type expression is legible when used as a small sticker on messaging apps like Whatsapp and Telegram.

Amended Brief for Task 3(B):
Duration: Week 11 – Week 12
Deadline: Week 13
Description:
With the knowledge and experience gained in the Exercises, Task 1 and Task 2, Task 3A, synthesise and apply the learning in the following tasks:
Your first task is to express typographically a social message/greeting relevant to the campus community at Taylor’s University or society at large.
1. Set your artboard size to 512 x 512 px (Adobe Illustrator)
2. Choose an appropriate typeface from the 10 given
3. Use Black & White only until the design is confirmed/approved
4. Save artwork as PDF & PNG, upload/embed onto e-portfolio.
You may use minor graphical elements or visuals to aid in your message and design. You may use the appropriate colour schemes after getting the black and white version approved. Ensure that the expression occupies the space and is legible and readable for its intended use.
Upon completion of the designed sticker, selected stickers will be used for social platforms Telegram/WhatsApp.

Design an attractive, functional, and visually impactful sticker. You may use Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop for the task.

Task 3B: Type Design & Communication

Figure 2.1. Visual research, 06/06/2021

The whole concept for this sticker is to use a font with a bold and firm style, indicating women are just as strong and can stand on their own feet. With the given fonts, I decided to go with Futura, bold condensed. Using the global symbol for females, I added a fist which is a symbolic gesture that goes back decades to show defiance and is associated with oppressed groups. For a long time, women are looked down on and face tremendous inequality. I ended up using pink as the main colour because it is often correlated as a 'girly' colour'. However, the gradient in the sticker was made up of a mix of different colours (shown in Fig 2.2) which I masked and applied the multiply effect. This means girls can be and do whatever they want! We can like colours other than the stereotypical pink!

 FEEDBACK

Week 11
General Feedback: Use a more feminine font
Specific feedback: Layout and placements of the letters could be arranged in a more 'joyful' or 'happy' way as festivals are supposed to be fun and not too serious

Week 12
General Feedback: white outline of 7 points needed around the sticker. add shadows to raise the words and add more depth
Specific feedback: Add dimensions (same feedback as given by lecturer)

 REFLECTIONS
Observations
By Week 14, I have noticed I tend to like the flat, simple yet cartoonish style, which I have come to the realisation I use that certain style in all my work. However, this doesn't necessarily mean individualism or uniqueness because different prompts would need different requirements.

Findings
Adding the slightest shadow and bevel effect could affect the whole look and feel of a piece of work bring the whole piece together. Always try to bring balance to a piece of work. This includes using elements of different weights to create an optical effect that makes something, be it a font, a letter or a sticker, stand firmly on the ground and not topple over.

Experience
Creating stickers are quite fun! In fact, I think I'll try making my very own sticker pack during my semester break. I will try to apply all the principles and rules of typography I have learnt in the last 14 weeks.
