 REFLECTIONS

Observations
At the beginning of the semester, I used to really like creating typographical work. After 14 weeks, my love for typography grew even more as I learnt about the little details and rules when it comes to designing and creating artwork with letters and typefaces. From learning how to express words typographically with minimal use of graphical elements to create our very own font, I have learnt that in every piece of work in any form, there must be balance and harmony. A stroke with one point heavier could throw off the whole design off balance and the harmony could be lost. Executing a good layout with an expressive and appropriate headline relating to the spirit or message of the text involves a long process from the designing stage to the publication. This is extremely important as any design work usually only has less than 5 seconds to really catch a viewer's attention. Other than that, creating a font needs a lot of research and understanding of fonts. Dissecting a popular and generally used typeface into its barest form could help us understand the structural and practical concept of a well-designed typeface.

Findings
This class was very interesting, to say the least. To be honest, I found this class very difficult because I can't seem to fully grasp the concept of typography. One class per week is definitely not enough, which means I should spend more of my free time on reading up more books on typography designs and watching demonstration tutorials, and trying out the techniques myself. I tried applying the learnt knowledge to my work but my lecturers seem to be unsatisfied still. However, this makes me even more interested and excited to learn more about this course because this means I still have a lot I can learn and improve myself on.  I am looking forward to Advanced Typography class in my next semester. I am eager to learn more about this topic and aim to excel in this one day. If I had the chance, I would do this all over again and I believe I could still learn more things I were not able to this time.

Experience
Throughout the last 14 weeks, I have a great deal of new knowledge and skillset from this typography class. Every week was very exciting and fulfilling when I get both positive feedback and criticism from my peers and lecturers as this shows I am progressing well. There are times when I got demotivated but my lecturers often reminded us to focus on our own improvement and not compare ourselves with others. Nevertheless, discussing work with my coursemate has found to be extremely helpful because art and design could be subjective. Having different standpoints on my design work helps me understand and view things from different perspectives, in order to create a good design work, My peers were very helpful and unselfish in giving feedback, which made all of us improve together. The whole experience was exhilarating because we have new tasks and projects every week.
