Project 2: Poster - Decisive Moment

 LECTURE

Week 6:
Mr. Kannan kicked off the class by guiding and teaching us the use of Adobe Photoshop and After Effects. Our task is to create a movie poster. It should capture a pivotal moment from a movie/ TV series/ book/ game etc. The poster should be minimalistic with non-complex animation. We are required to turn our movie posters into a looping GIF. Our session was immensely helpful as he were able to answer all our doubts.

12 Principles of Animation:
1. Squash and stretch
2. Anticipation
3. Staging
4. Straight Ahead/ Pose to pose
5. Follow through & overlapping
6. Slow in and slow out
7. Arcs
8. Secondary action
9. Timing
10. Exaggeration
11. Solid drawing
12. Appeal

Week 7 & 8:
No lectures were taken place due to Hari Raya break and Independent learning week.

Week 9:
Mr Kannan gave each of us feedback on how we can improve our work. He suggested I play around with the use of adjustment tools like brightness, curves and levels on Adobe Photoshop.

 PROJECT 2
Week 7:

For my poster, I have chosen the television series The Good Place. The pivotal scene I have decided on was when Eleanor found out that they are in fact, in the bad place. After rewatching the episode several times, I took screenshots for easier references later. I also did visual research so that the poster I create can match the same aesthetics and colour palette of the television series.

Below are the sketches I made on Procreate. I first listed down all the items and pieces of great significance during the pivotal moment. After careful consideration, I realise sketches 1 and 2 ( Fig 2.1 and 2.2) would be difficult to animate because shrimps and giraffes are living things with specific body proportions and precise muscle exertions. I believe I myself still do not acquire such animating skill so I deciding to not go on with this idea.

As for sketch 3, the little peel off on the top left indicates a facade, how the truth is covered up by a poster. Behind the poster, I positioned fire for it symbolises The Bad Place, a place in the series similar to hell. The falling of the letter 'E' in the word fine suggests how it really is not fine at all, and the main protagonist is not in The Good Place, a place similar to Heaven.

Week 8:
As shown in Figure 2.5, I visualised my looping GIF on Procreate, making sure what I wanted can be put together and the elements present can move smoothly. I then move on to digitalisation on Adobe Illustrator, where I illustrated 2 sketches. I settled with attempt #2 (Fig 2.6). I then added more details like highlights, shadows and textures on my poster.

Week 9:
My final work begins with the scene where Eleanor was introduced to The Good Place. It was already a pivotal moment as she will later find out all of these are false. The burning up of the posters right in front of her indicates the fire burning up in The Bad Place. After the poster is all burnt out, the devil Michael's iconic glasses appears and gives the audience a wink, suggesting a sinister lie and his fabrication of the fake 'Heaven'. His eyes also turn from his usual blue to a bright red for a brief moment. This reveals he is not the good architect like the audiences first thought he was, but a devil in disguise. Lastly, the fading transition is to reflect the many reboots Michael will be giving Eleanor and her friends in the upcoming episodes.
